Screen Actors Group Ōtautahi

Classes with Screen Actors Group Ōtautahi

Basics

Our classes run in five-week blocks, with one 2.5 hour class each week. Each block costs $150 ($30 /class). Classes are currently at Phillipstown Community Hub, on Wednesday nights from 6:30pm to 9pm.

We are allowing each director some discretion in terms of how they will use the allocated time. What is described below, is an example of what you might expect, but there is some variation.

Week One

During week one, you will meet your director and your fellow actors, and work on screen-acting skills. You will be put into pairs and given your first script to learn, for the following week. There is some scope for filming in the first week. This could be cold-reads or reshoots of scenes from a previous block.

Weeks Two to Five

Part 1: In the first part of each class, your director will work with you on a variety of screen-acting skills. These may include delivery, emotional engagement, script-analysis, cold-reading, audition prep, intimacy, etc.

Part 2: Each week you will have a script that you and your partner were given the week before. You are expected to know your script when you arrive.

Your scene will be filmed. The director may give you some adjustments. You should have time for two takes. Each pair will have a maximum time of 15 minutes.

Requirements

Our aim is to give you a genuine learning experience with a skilled director, and with other committed actors. Class sizes are kept small to ensure a high quality of work and a good ratio of active work.

This class is not intended for beginners. You should have at least some previous acting training. You will need to be comfortable learning a script and doing cold-reads - but commitment matters most.

You need to turn up, on time, and ready to work. You need to be willing and able to learn your script, as instructed by your director within the expected timeframe.

The scripts are typically around two to three minutes, and in many cases you will be tackling a new script each week. If you don't have time to learn a script, every week, this class is not for you.

We strive for a high level of courtesy and professionalism. Please, read the code of conduct page for details of what is expected of you as a student.
