About Screen Actors Group Ōtautahi

actors preparin to film

Christchurch is entering an exciting time of new opportunities in the screen industry. There is a new film studio being built. Screen Canterbury are doing lots of work to bring productions to the region, and there's a lot of interest from major US production companies to work in New Zealand (once we open back up).

The opportunities are coming, and we need to be ready.

Use it or lose it

Acting is a muscle that must be worked to remain strong. Too long between roles, and you can find yourself on the back foot going into auditions, but working on it regularly can see great results, that compound over time.

Who is it for?

More than anything we want actors who are committed to learning.

The classes are generally not suitable for absolute beginners, but enthusiasm and hard work go a long way. If in doubt message us.

We aim for the classes to be rewarding for everyone involved. Please, read more about what is expected.

How does it work?

Actors will work together, once a week, in five-week blocks with a director. Actors will be paired up each week, and given a script to learn for the following week. Scenes will be filmed, and provided to the actors for them to review. See the classes page for more details.

We've just published details for our first block of classes, with more info on the way. Check out the schedule for more details.

Our aim is to expose the actors to a variety of directing styles and ideas, so if you are an experienced director we are keen to work with you. Please see the directors page for more details.

SAGŌ was established by Jonathan Briden and Rush Jopson in 2021. Our aim is to create a great learning environment for screen actors to learn and to build those acting muscles. It's also an opportunity for local directors. We have aimed to keep the class sizes small and prices low, while still being able to pay a reasonable fee to the director for their work.
